Our Carers: What leaders can do now whilst we wait for change

The social care sector is at a crossroads. With workforce shortages, tight budgets, and an aging population, the big question for leaders in social care is: what can we do to support our care workers while we wait for broader changes?

The new Labour government has promised reforms to tackle NHS waiting times and improve integration between health and social care. While these promises are hopeful, real change takes time, and with talk of a £22 billion "black hole" having been identified (and what seems to be radio silence around social care), that change isn't coming any time soon.

In the meantime, our care workers are under immense pressure.

Skills for Care’s Workforce Strategy and the Care Workforce Pathway provide a roadmap for career development and training, aiming to elevate and recognise the role of care workers.

But for these efforts to truly make a difference, we need ongoing support from government policies, proper funding and a commitment from commissioners and providers to get ahead of the curve and begin implementation wherever possible.

What it means, is that as people within health and social care, we have to control the things we can - our carers need us now.

What Leaders Can Do:

  1. Invest in Training and Development: Even without immediate reforms, investing in your care workers’ professional growth can make a big impact. Support continuous learning and offer clear career paths within your organisation.
  2. Promote Well-being: Care work is tough, both physically and emotionally. Small, meaningful gestures—like acknowledging a job well done, offering flexible hours, or providing mental health support—can boost morale and show care workers they’re valued.
  3. Create a Culture of Appreciation: Build an environment where care workers feel respected and appreciated. Regular check-ins, celebrating achievements, and ensuring that staff feel heard goes a really long way.
  4. Advocate for Better Conditions: Use your influence to push for better pay and working conditions. Engage with policymakers and stakeholders to advocate for the systemic changes we know are needed.
  5. Follow the The Care Workers' Charity for tips and advice on how to look after the people around you, and stay in the loop with up to date knowledge on policy change and advocacy.

While we wait for systemic changes, there’s still a lot we can do to make a difference in the lives of our care workers.

By focusing on creating supportive environments, investing in their development, and showing appreciation, we can help retain our dedicated workforce and make sure they feel supported in their crucial roles.

Change is on the horizon, but our care workers need us now.

As leaders, we need to continue to champion those who form the backbone of our social care system.

One person at a time. Little by little.
