The brief:

With over 350,000 files stored in boxes offsite, this caused many problems for staff and services at Salisbury Hospital. The cost to store boxes offsite also proved to be an ongoing expense, with further problems including lost files and poor retrieval times. Due to the urgent healthcare environment, files are needed quickly with 24/7 access.

The hospital had a large, awkwardly shaped, and dark unused area. This space was part of the planned refurbishment, in which a storage solution would be installed to house 8000 linear metres of files.

The solution:

Rackline were invited to help the hospital prepare its plans and budget for approval, via a tender process. The Rackline team, using the size of the current file space, began to draw up plans for the room. Due to the unusual size of the room and low ceilings, it was re-planned several times to achieve the required capacity. Rackline provided 1130 bays of Profile and Multitrak mobile shelving, where files were stored on shelves with two full-height dividers per shelf. This was implemented to allow the easy retrieval of files. The total number of files Rackline supported Salisbury Hospital with storing was over 450,000. Rackline also used their light reflective powder-coated paint finish to ensure the previously dark area became more aesthetically pleasing for staff use. The hospital now has its files stored on-site with 24-hour access and have seen a reduced loss of files. The increased productivity and savings from using offsite storage will demonstrate less than a 3-year payback, this included all the builder’s work on site.
