Our Assignments Don't Always Feel Like 'Hell Yes'

One thing I've discovered in leadership is that it is a privilege as well as a great burden. Leading, I've discerned in general, but especially after the eight years of board service to the YWCA Kalamazoo - an organization I believe in with every fiber of my being - is that leadership can feel more like a heavy weight than a gift at times. This especially rings true as you matriculate through leadership and hold some of the highest level seats within an organization, as is the case for me as the current board chair.?
I'm honored to be in the role, and in fact, deep down wouldn't want to be doing anything else, and to be honest it is downright trying at times. I volunteer countless hours. Attend all of our committee meetings. Support our CEO. Encourage and hold accountable the board for a myriad of things. And the list goes on. That alone can be a challenge and then when we mix actually leading change and varied personalities, its a trip y'all.?
And what I know to be true is that this is exactly where I'm supposed to be - that although there are times when I am deeply uncomfortable in the midst of the work, this is my assignment. Something is being birthed in me, and the more I can accept the rigor of the assignment, the more I can be in flow to do what's necessary.
?I used to think that assignments felt good when we're in our purpose, but leading over the years has helped me see otherwise. Sometimes assignments don't present themselves in butterflies and rainbows, but instead as growing pains. They are there to birth something in you that deep down in your soul you're yearning for but may not even know it.
This is why having support on your passion journey is so critical. In those moments when it feels unbearable, we have a buffer to help carry us forward - not only to keep us committed to our assignment until it is complete (learning and all) but to help us find the joy in the midst of the hardship.
People are our number one pathways to abundance as I have said in the past. We were not designed to be alone, nor do it alone. This is why I hired a coach to work with me at the start of this year. I knew that I would need support, not just for my service as board chair to the YWCA Kalamazoo, but also to partner with me in so many other things like finally completing my book (which is getting close y'all).?
Just like I do for my clients, my coach helped me to recenter, stay grounded in joy as my birthright, and pushed me to grow in areas such as consistently speaking my truth.?
