Starting next year, the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) will mandate that all European companies with a turnover of EUR 40 million or more report their global emissions, including Scope 3 emissions such as outsourced logistics and transport. By 2028, this requirement will extend to all mid-sized companies selling products in the EU market. Similar regulations are expected to be introduced in other major economies, pushing companies to take more substantial actions.
While carbon emission trends vary across regions and industries, the electricity and transportation sectors remain the primary sources of increased emissions. For companies in the logistics and transportation field, the challenge of expanding market share while achieving energy-saving and emission reduction targets is formidable. Industry leaders are already planning to adapt to these new requirements, viewing compliance not just as a way to avoid legal risks but also as an opportunity to enhance corporate competitiveness and social responsibility.
The key to effective carbon emission management is ensuring that data adheres to globally recognized standards, guaranteeing its authenticity, accuracy, and compliance. Consequently, some companies are turning to Transportation Management System (TMS) technology to help reduce and measure emissions. This includes using optimization features to construct more efficient routes, employing analytical techniques to collect emission and carbon footprint information, and selecting more environmentally friendly modes of transportation, such as rail or water transport.
As a pioneer in the field of corporate transportation digitalization and intelligence, oTMS has always focused on industry needs. In March 2024, oTMS launched the Carbon Emission Module in Production. For orders within the oTMS system, users can automatically calculate the carbon emission data for each order based on order data (distance, quantity, weight, volume) and vehicle data (vehicle model, carrying capacity, fuel type, license plate color, emission standards, and fuel consumption).
Additionally, the system provides a unified data dashboard that allows filtering by various dimensions such as date, mode of transportation, fuel type, truck type, emission standards, origin, and destination, and users can export the data.
Following the module's launch, oTMS has initiated a pilot project with one of our key clients, a multinational in a food industry . This client has always taken "innovation, proximity, and transmission" as the core of its development since its establishment. Quality commitment and environmental considerations are the two main focuses of this client. To meet the stringent requirements of the quality policy and address potential ecological challenges in the future, they have been committed to improving the ecological environment for the long term.
Previously, the client relied on manual collection of vehicle data and transportation distances, which raised issues regarding the timeliness and accuracy of the data. After utilizing the module's features, the following achievements in carbon emission accounting were realized:
- Compliance: In line with standards, effectively practicing carbon neutrality goals and making adjustments and optimizations.

- Visibility: By using a data dashboard, carbon footprints are visualized, enabling timely and effective carbon management, achieving operational carbon neutrality.
- Accuracy: The system automatically captures multidimensional data to achieve high-precision calculations, generating carbon emission data with a single click, avoiding manual errors, and making the review process smoother.
