I was chatting with my 11yr old stepson last week about being scared, or more about fear, and in this case, his fear of the dark. As we were talking (and I was thinking of ways to convince him there was no need to fear the dark), it got me thinking that it’s not the dark that he fears, it’s the unknown and what can happen not knowing that unknown. Which made me think fear should really be called “what if” because that’s what it is.
What if I fail, what if I embarrass myself, what if it doesn’t work, or what if there is a monster in the closet that only comes out when it’s completely dark and I’m alone? But we’re looking at the “what if” the wrong way.
Instead of the negative view of what if, what if (see what I did there) we focused on the positive side.
What if I succeed, what if I don’t embarrass myself?and it’s a ton of fun, what if this new project succeeds. What if there is no monster and I can celebrate a victory over the dark. What if I take a few minutes to explore a new way of doing things, a new idea?
What if we told fear that we control the what if, not fear.
Fear will always be present, whether it’s as simple as not trying new food, or as big as a 6-7 figure purchase. Our job is to recognize it’s there, but what if we try anyway.?One of the things I love most about Mortgage365 is our approach to business via our slogan: Own what’s possible. Take control of that fear, that "what if" and make it a possibility, not a shackle that holds you back. Now get out there and do just that. Own what’s possible.
