Ostrava’s architecture ranks among the top 5 in Europe
In May,??? #Barcelona hosted the awards ceremony in the EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award 2024. And Ostrava scored a remarkable success ?? with its conversion of the historic city slaughterhouse to create a new home for the PLATO contemporary art gallery . Members of the jury ranked the slaughterhouse project among the top 5 in the #Architecture category. A total 362 projects were entered for the first round of the competition.
?? The revitalization project was designed by the architect Robert Konieczny KWK Promes . The new ?? gallery has put Ostrava firmly on the global architectural map.
Deputy Mayor Hana Tichánková expressed her delight: “This amazing success heralds a new era in Ostrava’s history. Once a grey industrial city, its potential is now being unlocked as it is transformed into a spacious, green urban hub with vibrant culture, new opportunities, and an excellent quality of life. It has been wonderful to hear people asking all about Ostrava, and I’m incredibly proud to be a part of this story.”
Amazing architecture Part 2 – the historic Grossmann villa
Another of Ostrava’s architectural gems is the interwar-era Grossmann villa . Having once fallen into dereliction, it has now been rescued by a full restoration project. The villa now serves as a venue for exhibitions, concerts ?? and other cultural and community events.
? The villa changed ownership many times during its history, and from a family home it was later used for various other purposes, including a preschool. In 2005 the school moved out, and for many years the house stood vacant. The City tried to sell it on several occasions, but without success, so eventually the decision was taken to renovate the building ?? – and on 4 April this year, the villa was at last opened to the public ??.
Learn all about its fascinating history and the saga of Franti?ek Grossmann’s family. You can tour the beautifully restored interiors, ?? admire the elegant décor, and immerse yourself in the unmistakable atmosphere of the interwar years.

An experimental apartment block where nobody ever lived…
Perhaps you know the iconic tower block in Ostr?ilova Street , a landmark that has dominated Ostrava’s cityscape for many decades? After an unsuccessful attempt to sell the building – which locals have nicknamed “the skyscraper” – there is now renewed hope that it will be rescued from demolition. The City put the building back on the market, this time with different conditions, and the winning bid was submitted by the company First Skyscraper s.r.o. Negotiations are now underway to finalize the terms of the contract ??.
The ?? reconstruction project, which is the brainchild of the renowned Czech-born architect Eva Jiricna , means that this distinctive landmark can be preserved and revitalized for modern use.
A brand-new public space in southern Ostrava, and an opportunity for developers
One of the main public spaces in southern Ostrava (Ostrava-Jih) is the large square in the Záb?eh district (Náměstí SNP) – which will soon be transformed into a modern urban hub. Currently dominated by car parking, the square will be remodelled with a new amphitheatre, a ???? park, plus new ?? parking facilities in the nearby area. The market stalls will be relocated, and the two sides of the square (currently separated by a road) will be integrated to create a single whole. The aim is to create a place where people can meet up ??♂?, enjoy leisure activities, and work ??.
The redevelopment project was designed by the architectural studio MAAUS s.r.o. in conjunction with Ostrava’s Municipal Studio for Urban Planning and Architecture (MAPPA ). The plans have now been finalized, and the City is seeking an investor to build a new complex on the site of the current market stalls, which will combine office space, residential units, and shops.
In another part of Ostrava-Jih, at the square outside the Church of the Holy Spirit, a project is now underway to create a revitalized space for community activities and gatherings. The project has been designed by the M2AU studio, which won the architectural competition. When complete, the square will have new greenery ???? and comfortable benches??, as well as a shallow water feature??. The parking spaces ?? will not disappear; they will merely be relocated ?? to the area around the Volgogradská St. preschool, the church and Kotlá?ova St. The ?? reconstruction work is scheduled for 2026–2027, and the project planning process ?? is currently underway.
