Hey Networking folks!!

Wondering why OSPF is not forming neighbors dynamically, here's why:

  1. Area numbers must match for two routers to become OSPF Neighbors.
  2. Interfaces must be on the same subnet to become OSPF Neighbors.
  3. OSPF process must not be shut down.

Explanation: OSPF process can be shutdown on a router, like an interface. This disables OSPF operation, without removing OSPF configurations.

4. OSPF Router ID's must be unique.

Explanation: Make sure that that two or more routers does not have same Router ID. This is though not possible unless manually configured.

5. Hello & Dead Time must match.

6. Authentication settings must match.

Note: We can configure OSPF password & then router will only become neighbors with the routers that have matching OSPF password.

7. IP MTU setting must match.

Note: Even if IP MTU settings does not match, routers can become OSPF neighbors, but OPSF doesn't operate properly.

8. OSPF network type must match.

Note: Even if OSPF Network type does not match, routers can become OSPF neighbors, but OPSF doesn't operate properly.
