Twin Striker 4x4s Delivered to Centennial Airport in Colorado

On September 11, 2001, a 1998 Oshkosh T-Series numbered “Foam 331” responded to the Pentagon from Reagan International Airport. After 9/11, the truck continued its service life at the airport before it was retired from service in 2018.

Through contacts at the airport, Oshkosh Airport Products was made aware the truck was headed to a scrapyard, but the team understood it had too much significance to allow that to happen. The truck was brought back to Neenah to be restored, but beyond the restoration, there wasn’t a plan for what would come next.

Former Chief of Fire and Rescue for the Baltimore Washington International Airport, Bill Stewart, connected with representatives from the Smithsonian Museum. The collaborative team believed the Smithsonian Museum was the location where this historic truck belonged – to continue its service in educating the public about the significance of that fateful day.?

The truck was restored by Oshkosh Airport Products employees in consultation with Smithsonian representatives, many of whom donated their free time to help with the project.

In April 2023, the refurbished truck arrived at its final home - the Air and Space Museum’s Steve Udvar-Hazy Center. The vehicle is on display in an exhibit to commemorate and honor the first responders of 9/11 and educate future generations of the ARFF industry’s involvement on that day at the Pentagon.

Electrify the Future

In case you missed it, the first purchase orders of the Striker? Volterra? Electric ARFF Vehicle have been finalized. This revolutionary ARFF technology allows for less fuel consumption, reduced emissions and less overall maintenance throughout the life of the truck.
