OSHA Fines Increase for First Time Since 1990
Did you know that changes have been made by OSHA that may affect various businesses? Having started August 1st, 2016, businesses found in violation of federal occupational safety and health laws will pay more in penalties. This marks the first time the penalties have increased since 1990.
The change is a result of federal penalty adjustments mandated by the Congress last year, and the penalties are now going up nearly 80 percent to account for inflation. The maximum penalty a company must pay for serious violations is rising from $7,000 to $12,471, and the same goes for if a company fails to correct a violation. If a company is wilfully or repeatedly violating health laws and occupational safety, the maximum penalty is now $124,708 per violation, instead of the previous $70,000.
Even more, any citations issued by OSHA on or after August 1, 2016 will be subject to the new penalties scale if the related violations happened after November 2, 2015.
