I was intoxicated by Fernanda Torres’ victory at the Golden Globe when I wrote my last article. I promised that this time I would talk about Demi Moore, Walter Salles, and Mrs. Fernanda.
I found it curious that Demi Moore won Best Actress in a "comedy". I didn't find the least bit funny about the film "The Substance." But her speech upon receiving the award was “universal” and resonated deeply with women of all generations:
“In moments when we don’t feel intelligent enough, or pretty enough, or thin enough, or successful enough, or simply not enough, a woman told me: just know that you will never be enough, but you can know your own worth if you stop comparing yourself. So today I celebrate this award as a marker of my completeness, of the love that drives me, and the gift of doing something I love. And a reminder that I do belong!”
Beyond that speech, she made a point of congratulating Fernanda backstage. A moment duly celebrated and captured by the lens of Selton Mello. Yes, Demi Moore represents me!
What can we say about Walter Salles, the film director? “Nanda is the soul of the film,” he said, “what was being awarded there was the soul of the film, and it happened because of her extraordinary talent. I thought a lot about Mrs. Fernanda (her mother) while she was walking (to the stage) when in '99 the film (Central Station) won the award. And that beautiful, improvised speech that came from within was Nanda, a person who is always in total harmony with herself.” How can you not love Walter Salles? Since the beginning of my youth, I’ve always wanted to tell him: “Waltinho, I’ve never seen you but I’ve always loved you!”
As for Mrs. Fernanda, she was splendid in her role as a proud and emotional mother: “I’ve lived to see this, a vocation transferred in this dimension to Nanda, as an actress. This life of ours as actors is very particular, special, and mysterious. It’s a divine talent. We are the third bank of the river; we exist on stage, and that is an unyielding vocation. We carry on. The stage continues. The interpretation of the human being in total freedom continues. Bravo, my daughter, bravo!”
Let the Oscars come! For me, Nanda, Waltinho, and Mrs. Fernanda have already won!
