Breakthrough Devices

There have been some brilliant updates from the FDA with several companies granted breakthrough Device Designation. This expedites the development and review for serious conditions where early clinical evidence suggests substantial improvement over available therapies.

The Fusion Revolution Continues

There has been a significant rise in treatment options that can prevent fusion for those who may not need it. Manufacturers like 3Spine & Companion Spine are looking at joint replacement or early interventions as an example.

However, DirectSync Surgical is working to improve the surgical outcomes of fusion when it is necessary. They received breakthrough designation for its smart implant that could revolutionize spinal fusion surgery. Powered by the patient's natural walking motion, the device generates electrical stimulation that promotes bone healing.

Not only does it provide localized electrical stimulation, but it also offers post-operative diagnostics and data to help doctors make informed treatment decisions. This means patients can benefit from a more robust post-operative care continuum, empowering them to achieve better outcomes.

DirectSync is now raising funds to accelerate its efforts and initiate first-in-human studies, which could change the future of spinal fusion surgery. Contact Zygmunt Porada if you are looking for an #investmentopportunity.

Tackling early onset scoliosis

Current treatment options for this condition can be exhausting and painful for young children, not to mention the costs for families. They are often associated with high complication rates, requiring multiple surgeries or clinical interventions and frequent hospital visits.

Cresco Spine has developed the innovative Spring Distraction System (SDS) entering the breakthrough program with the FDA recognizing its significant potential to offer a more effective and less burdensome treatment option for #earlyonsetscoliosis.

The evidence suggests that SDS can reduce the number of operations and eliminate clinical lengthening interventions, while providing three-dimensional guided spinal growth, even for extreme scoliotic deformations.

This is a fantastic step in the right direction for young patients suffering from early onset scoliosis.

A milestone for knee pain.

BioPoly were granted designation for it's Knee System, which utilizes the company's proprietary synthetic cartilage material for partial resurfacing in the femoral condyle. This innovative knee system has already been proven to effectively reduce pain and improve patients' quality of life.

The company's founder and CTO, Herb Schwartz , praised the combination of BioPoly's synthetic cartilage material, the eloquent design of the implant, and the benefits it offers. With over 27 patents issued for its material, processes, and implant design, BioPoly is at the forefront of orthopedic innovation.

Centinel Spine recently announced 2022 as a record-breaking year for motion preservation, generating $45 million in revenue which places them as number two in the total disc replacement market (globally).

Founded by Viscogliosi Bros., LLC , Centinel has been on the rise for several years. In 2017, John Viscogliosi repurchased the assets to prodisc, setting Centinel on a mission to become the key player in the TDR market.

Under the leadership of Steve Murray , the company has advanced its portfolio with FDA approval for three new cervical prodisc implant options in 2022 alone (two of which have already been launched)

Centinel is growing at remarkable rates worldwide with customer feedback at the highest level. Dr William Bradley recently outlined that "Centinel's vast prodisc offering means physicians can tailor cervical arthroplasty implants to patient anatomy and expand indications when clinically relevant"

I'm fascinated by what's next for Centinel.

More growth? Preparing for acquisition? .....I guess we will have to wait and see!
