The Orphan Who Made It

The Orphan Who Made It

In a world often overshadowed by darkness and despair, there are stories that illuminate the indomitable human spirit. This is my story—a journey from the heart of Africa to the shores of Canada, carrying with me a message of resilience and hope.

Early Tragedy and Resilience

My life began with a tragic twist. I lost both of my parents at the tender ages of nine and thirteen. As if this heartache weren't enough, a few years later, at sixteen, I faced one of the most harrowing events in modern history: the Genocide Against The Tutsi in Rwanda. Surviving this atrocity was just the beginning of my arduous journey. This year marks 30 years since I left Rwanda, the land of my ancestors.

The Struggles in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Fleeing the violence in Rwanda, I found myself in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo. Almost homeless and often without enough food, I managed to put myself through high school. This period was marked by unimaginable hardship, yet it was also a testament to my incredible determination and will to survive.

A Perilous Escape

In 1996, as the War of Congo liberation erupted, the need to escape once again became urgent. My departure from Bukavu was sudden and fraught with danger. My brother and I fled to Nairobi, Kenya, arriving as clandestine immigrants. In a city where we barely spoke the language, our resilience was tested yet again.

A Life-Saving Encounter

In Nairobi, we enrolled in an English school, found an apartment, and began making plans for the future. It was the late '90s, and Rap/R&B, hip-hop, and brands like FUBU were all the rage. Despite the challenges, we managed to build a life for ourselves and formed a crucial connection with a local we met at Barclay's Bank. This friendship would eventually prove life-saving.

While Nairobi had its vibrant appeal, it was also dangerous, as immigrants were constantly harassed by the police. One day, we were arrested and on the brink of disappearing into the unknown. A desperate call to our friend led to our release. This incident was pivotal, underscoring the precariousness of our situation and pushing us to seek safety beyond Africa's borders.

A New Beginning in Canada

In 1997, at the age of nineteen, I arrived in Canada, finding myself in the quaint Acadian fishing village of Cheticamp. While this new chapter offered safety, it also brought its own set of challenges. Loneliness and an undiagnosed depression loomed large, but my enduring and resilient spirit saw me through.

The Healing Power of Humor

During these tough times, an unexpected source of comfort emerged: stand-up comedy. The ability to find humor even in the darkest of times became a lifeline, a beacon of light that guided me through the shadows of my past traumas and current struggles.

A Message of Hope

My incredible journey, spanning continents and fraught with peril, is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Despite facing unimaginable tragedies and challenges, my unwavering positivity and determination have been the cornerstones of my survival. My story is not just one of endurance but also of hope and the transformative power of laughter.

Today, reflecting on a life marked by profound loss, intense hardship, and ultimate triumph, I stand as a beacon of inspiration. My journey from Rwanda to Canada, from surviving genocide to thriving in a new land, reminds us all of the incredible strength of the human spirit. It's a story that teaches us to find hope in the darkest of times and to believe in the power of resilience and positivity.
