GO TRACE - More Traceability, for Responsible Fashion
Traceability rules, tips, events, networking, tools, laws, training and more, for the clothing industry.
Dear GO TRACE Community,
Welcome to the 80th edition of our GO TRACE Newsletter. For this new edition, we are glad to have once again the support of Oritain on our mission to bring you fresh news on fashion traceability and transparency.
In this edition, a notable highlight is the proposal from the European Commission to delay the implementation of the EUDR from December 2024 to December 2025, providing companies with an additional year to adapt to the new regulation, which some find overwhelming. Deforestation contributed 2.4 gigatonnes of CO2 in 2023, and under the Green Deal, the EUDR mandates deforestation-free supply chains, with penalties reaching 4% of annual revenue and the confiscation of affected products. While technological advances like AI and satellite imagery can aid compliance, the extra 12 months will help ensure effective implementation, according to the Commission.
In this edition you will also find a short definition of what EUDR is, as a reminder and some more news.
I let you discover it for yourself!

?? A BRIEF DEFINITION
EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR):
The EUDR is a European Union law aimed at preventing deforestation driven by the import and trade of certain commodities like soy, palm oil, wood, cocoa, and leather. Adopted on June 29, 2023, it requires companies to ensure that products sold in the EU are not linked to deforestation or forest degradation, directly or indirectly, for activities after the cut-off date of December 31, 2020. Businesses must conduct strict due diligence and provide evidence that their supply chains are free from illegal or unsustainable deforestation practices. This regulation applies to both imported and EU-produced goods.
The regulation is set to be enforced starting on December 30, 2024, but as seen in today's news, the implementation may be delayed. The new enforcement date might be December 2025 for large companies and June 2026 for small businesses. The EUDR pushes for greater transparency and accountability in global supply chains, with new guidance covering information systems, penalties, definitions, and traceability obligations.
