Origins of the kilt and Scotland

Did you know the Celtic kilt is not really Irish? Skirt kilts as well as fabric tartan patterns are from Scottish influence. That can be confusing because the Scots were actually Irish. The names Scot and Scotland came from the Roman word for all the Irish and Celtic Gaels, "scoti" (Latin). It wasn't until later that Scotland came to be differentiated from Ireland as a distinct group and nation and took on the Scot name.
As far as kilts go, they are believed to have come from the original ancient Irish shirt or tunic leine (pronounced lay-nyah or lay-nah, which is Irish for shirt; pictured here). They were called war shirts because they were the traditional dress for Irish men and soldiers, though women also commonly wore them.
The ancient leine seemed to have gone out of fashion because they required a great deal of fabric to make. However, because of this history, you will not find kilts in my new Irish book. https://www.facebook.com/achingprosperity
