Originality is Overrated
"Be original," we're so often told.
But actually, history shows most big, successful companies simply executed existing ideas better than anyone else.
McDonalds didn’t invent burgers.
Facebook (Meta) didn’t invent social networks.
As a board member, you certainly don’t want to discourage creativity, but often entrepreneurs have a habit of trying to reinvent the wheel when the solution is already right in front of their eyes. If you’re doing your job right you should have the ability to help them with this.
Real success is often more evolutionary than revolutionary.

Noise Versus Signal
Insights from Martin Jimmink and Callum Laing
In the dynamic world of startups and microcaps, experience is the ultimate compass. Just like in an emergency room, where priorities are crystal clear, the same principle applies here.
Imagine it this way: a seasoned ER nurse can swiftly distinguish between a minor cut and a life-threatening situation. Similarly, in the business realm, experience helps us cut through the noise and focus on what truly matters.
At Veblen, we're fortunate to have a diverse team with a wealth of experiences. When we face corporate emergencies, we can turn to our experts to navigate the path forward.
So, whether you're starting a new venture or joining a board, remember the importance of experience in identifying and addressing the most critical issues. Let's keep learning and growing together!
