The origin of the New Year
The origin of the New Year celebration dates back thousands of years. It is believed to have started with the ancient Mesopotamians around 2000 BCE. They marked the beginning of a new year with the spring equinox in March, a time symbolizing renewal and rebirth.
Later, in 46 BCE, Roman Emperor Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar, declaring January 1 as the start of the new year. This change was in honor of Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and transitions, who was depicted with two faces—one looking to the past and the other to the future.
The tradition of celebrating the New Year spread across different cultures, each adding unique customs and rituals to the occasion, such as fireworks, feasts, and making resolutions to set positive intentions for the year ahead. Today, January 1 is widely recognized as the start of the new year in most countries following the Gregorian calendar.
