In June, you built out a toolkit full of field tactics. Now, how do you use them?
All month long, join us to learn how to recruit, manage, and train volunteers and have meaningful conversations with your voters to Organize Yourself Into a Win!
What is Organizing?
What does organizing even mean in the first place? Organizing can mean a lot of things, but we will specifically be talking about how to recruit volunteers, organize volunteers, and equip volunteers with necessary tools to further the campaign.
There are many skills that you will learn to hone this month, but first let's break down just a few of the things we’ll cover in July.
Identifying Volunteer Needs
Every campaign is different which means the needs of each campaign are unique. When looking for volunteers, you must first consider what you need or want out of the volunteer’s work with the campaign. While every campaign will need volunteers to knock doors and make phone calls, they can do much more and you should take advantage of that. Strong volunteers can fill leadership roles like communications director or database administrator, or even campaign manager.?
Recruiting Volunteers
Volunteers are a cornerstone of successful campaigns. Before someone says yes to volunteering for you they need to buy into your vision. They need to know why you're running, and how you're going to improve the community. Effectively communicating your message is key to getting people to believe in you and motivate them to put their time and energy into helping you get elected.
Having Meaningful Conversations
Volunteers are more likely to work hard for your campaign or candidate when they feel a connection with the people around them. This can happen through 1:1 (one-on-one) conversations. These conversations are where you and your volunteers begin building a relationship, and you will learn what motivates these volunteers and what skills they have.

Training Volunteers
For volunteers to be successful, each and every volunteer will need to be trained. Training sets the tone and expectations you have of your volunteers. It also gives them the tools and knowledge they need to meet those expectations. The more robust and frequent your volunteer trainings are, the more volunteers grow their own teams’ capacity (and therefore your campaign’s capacity,) because they can now take what they’ve learned and train others. Through this approach, you empower volunteer leaders to become organizers within their communities.
Creating Equitable and Inclusive Campaign Practices
In order to maintain volunteers and create an environment suitable for your staff, understanding the basics of equity and inclusion are a necessary skill. Knowing how to not only organize your own staff according to high standards of equity and inclusion, but also running a campaign on the same basis is key to crossing that finish line.
Plus so many more skills!
