Organize Your Content Like Organizing Your Closet in 3 Steps

Over the years working in a professional environment I have accumulated a lot of clothes, shoes, and handbags that I wear for work. Now I happen to be the type of girl that really loves fashion as well, so you can imagine my closet can get messy at times! What I have learned is if you don’t keep your closet organized, it becomes what I call in my house, a clothing bomb.
I make the same connection with my wardrobe that I do with content for marketing. If your business’ content is not organized and put in its place, it can be a real mess that takes a while to clean up.
You need content for social media, your website, advertising, and for marketing in general. I define content as images, videos, text or files, and creative graphics. Content can be used online for videos, vlogs, blogs, or social media posts, as well as commercials, or ads.
When I first stepped into my role for the auto group I work for, there was no content library, so I created one. The reason you should have a content library is that it gives you as the business owner full control of your content. This will keep you prepared in case of any unforeseen changes to your go-to-market advertising structure as well. ( ie: changing marketing staff or agencies)
Here is what you need to do to create your own library:
Step 1. Access all the business photos, videos, (commercials too), audio files, creative graphics, and OEM data files (if applicable, like your pumps and PMA info) If you work with an agency, they should (hopefully) have one for you from the past in addition.
Step 2. Sign up for a site like Box.com or dropbox.com to be the base. I personally use dropbox for my own content I create! You can also use your google drive as well without paying an additional fee.
Step 3. Organize your library into 3 categories for 2020 (and beyond): Social Media, Creative Graphics, and Data Files. Then sort by business and then the month.
- In Social Media, you will have a section for Photography, Video, and OEM. Don’t forget – the OEM has a ton of this content that they add to all the time in their own ad labs.
- In Creative Graphics, add a section for Website, Google my Business, and Other (Other would be any marketing area you upload content to)
- In Data Files you will store any manufacturer data or any customer data that you use for marketing strategy.
And just like that, voila! You are organized. Do you have a content library?

4 年Great piece of advice. Having a content library is important. I also have a calendar so that I can see what we've done and what we will do in the future. The most important thing in my file cabinet is my "swipe file". Any marketer worth their salt has one. I collect anything and everything - especially headlines and offers so that I can stay up to date on what's working and what might not be. My swipe file is a great place to look for ideas when you hit the proverbial wall. In our world, content is king and if you don't stay on top of it, you'll get run over by it.
