In 2023, the U.S. organic market (including food and non-food products) totaled $69.7 billion in sales, an increase of 3.4%, as reported by the Organic Trade Association. Organic food sales reached $63.8 billion last year.?
For both organic food and non-food products, pricing was the main driver of the boost in dollar sales in 2023. However, the price gap between organic and conventional is narrowing, as many non-organic items experienced steeper price growth than their organic counterparts.
Accounting for 29.4% of organic sales, organic produce continues to lead the market — the category grew by 2.6% in 2023, reaching $20.5 billion and making up more than 15% of total fruit and vegetables sales in the U.S. Avocadoes, berries, apples, carrots, and packaged salads were the top performers in organic produce.?

“In the face of inflation and considering organic is already seen as a premium category, the current growth shows that consumers continue to choose organic amidst economic challenges and price increases,” said Tom Chapman, co-CEO of the Organic Trade Association.
