In the Rouch's film, the action takes place in the setting of Sainte-Anne hospital. Psychiatrist Charcot takes his colleagues to the presentation of a “spectacular case”. This (re)presentation that psychiatrists and spectators share is the delirious dialogue that begins between an old West Indian woman interned at Sainte-Anne for fifty years, and a young Martinican caregiver who recently arrived in Paris.
