McD caught up to the digital enterprise revolution over the past five years. It not only pioneered the drive through but is experimenting with AI chat based voice assistant to take orders in the drive-ins. The McDs digital transformation is a parallel to the success of Nike on digital. These two companies are a great example of how the worlds of B2C and B2B intersect due to digital to become a Direct-2-Customer play.
Shifting labour attitudes to repeatable, high-stress, minimum wage jobs will only accentuate this digital push by companies resulting in a mix of digital access to customers, delivery systems integration and automation of repeatable tasks. Amazon is ahead on this journey and has shown that automation of their warehouses while decreasing headcount in them has increased employment on the last mile jobs.
But the pace of the customer's digital experience and the design of work on the physical labour side is not 1:1 factor. If fact it is 5:1. Companies are accelerating digital convenience to customers but lag in redesigning work and tasks for employees creating a design imbalance between customer experience and employee experience. The pandemic accelerated this imbalance.
