Reflection is about surprise, doubt and unexpected insights, yet medical education research approaches it as a neat and measurable process. Few studies offer insightful information for those in ‘the swamplands’: educators facilitating reflection sessions. To examine what actually happens in group reflection, we pointed our cameras at GP residents. Using Conversation Analysis, we described the architecture of their group reflection sessions and found four building blocks: Significant Event, Reason for Sharing, Learning Issue, and Learning Uptake. These findings serve as a practical map for educators, and form an evidence base for discussions about how group reflection fits into the modern medical curriculum.
