Orchestrating a digital agri-ecosystem
In the Spotlight
Digital Soil Mapping (DSM) is computer-aided mapping of different soil types and properties. This data is then used in soil inference systems. Traditionally, field soil experts surveyed fields that involved manual delineation of soil boundaries. On the other hand, DSM uses technological and computational advances for a far more accurate soil mapping. The technology continues to grow as soil scientists adopt the latest tools to assist in the entire mapping process.
Tech Showcase
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computers and computer-aided systems. Wikipedia defines AI as: “Intelligence demonstrated by machines, as opposed to the natural intelligence displayed by animals including humans.” It primarily uses research-driven algorithms that mimic the sequential methods humans use to solve problems and crop diseases that can impact crop productivity.

Industry Updates
The Government of India has taken some welcome steps that leverage digital technologies to build innovative agri-focused solutions. However, agriculture continues to remain among the least digitalized sectors in India.
Significantly improved crop quality, better yields, supply chain transparency, reduction in food wastage, farmer empowerment and climate-smart agriculture are just some of the ways agricultural productivity can be enhanced by leveraging technology, data and ecosystems.
?However, experts believe the challenge lies in implementing the technologies. Given the sector’s diversity and complexity in India — with the variety of crops, soil conditions, climate zones, etc. — it could prove to be a Herculean task.
?A structured vision and a corresponding roadmap are the need of the hour for the sector’s effective digital transformation.
