Orb's Revolution: My Personal Account of Becoming a Verified Unique Human

Spoiler alert!!! I'm neither in favor nor against it yet, but if everything promised in the Whitepaper is true, I would tend to be in favor.

Last week Sam Altman (the same from OpenAI) officially launched the WLD Token, offering a universal basic income (in crypto) to those users who agreed to be verified as unique humans and thus acquire their virtual ID.

The project has 3 vertices:

1. World App: It’s a wallet (self-custodial). Users can save and send money for free. And of course, claim WLD Token grants.
2. World ID: This is a digital passport that allows its users to prove their unique and real identity while maintaining their anonymity. When signing in with World ID, users can authenticate themselves on web, mobile, and decentralized applications, and privately assert their personhood
3. World Token (WLD): A more human token, freely, equally, and globally distributed to unique humans.

However, there are some quite controversial points about this project, especially regarding privacy. But having gone through the validation process and having fully read the Whitepaper, I want to give my point of view today:

1. Very easy onboarding: Downloading the app and registering is extremely simple. This caused more than 2,145,245 people in 35 countries worldwide to download an app (and crypto wallet) in less than a week. Most of them with no prior knowledge of crypto or blockchain.
2. WorldCoin vs Other similar projects: Unlike other projects with a similar base like Proof of Humanity and UBI, WorldCoin does not require the user to previously own crypto to pay for gas fees. Nor does it require human intermediaries in the validation of the uniqueness of the person who wants to verify.
3. Taking onboarding beyond digital: The validators, known as Orbis, are physically located in shopping malls, supermarkets, and other heavily trafficked public places, making the service accessible to people from various segments of society. Argentina alone boasts 19 of these locations

All this makes it clearly different, besides having the potential to take web3 out of the crypto bubble.

1. Data Privacy: Maybe the most controversial aspect of the whole project. Users register anonymously (without name or physical ID), and Orbis does not store the data. The iris scan is only for registration and to be verified as human (at least that's what the whitepaper and the website say)
2. Universal Basic Income: Upon signing up for a World ID, users in countries that allow the operation of Worldcoin can receive 25 WLD tokens as a “genesis grant.” Each user can then claim a free WLD token each week. If we consider that each WLD is valued at 2 USD today, it is not much, but in countries of extreme poverty or instability, it can guarantee a minimum additional income for people. The market will say how much this token can be worth over time.
3. Inclusion and financial freedom: To my surprise in Argentina, in the queue to be validated as humans, to download the app and start receiving WLD, the public was not at all techie, nor had previous experience in crypto, but found it fascinating to be able to receive an income in dollars, within a very unstable economy like that of Argentina.
4. Room for Improvement: The onboarding process lacked narrative appeal and sufficient training for operators. In Argentina, the app's appeal was solely financial gain – 2 dollars a week, with no mention of decentralization, financial freedom, or the empowering concept of anonymous human verification and universal digital passport.
5. User support: in the app, there is a channel to open tickets with questions and queries, and they promise quick responses. I have asked something, and the ticket is still open waiting for a response 3 hours later.

As this venture remains in its beta phase, its true success is yet to be measured by the sands of time.
