ORBIS and Maine Maritime Academy Celebrate Milestone in New Trade Skill Program

July 31, 2024 – Charleston, SC. - Orbis Sibro, Inc. (dba ORBIS), in collaboration with Maine Maritime Academy , is pleased to announce the successful completion of the first half of Phase One of their newly established trade skill program, the Naval Shipyard Institute (NSI). Launched on July 8, 2024, at the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, ME, the NSI is a major initiative aimed at meeting the workforce demands of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine.

NSI is funded by the Submarine Industrial Base (SIB) as part of their workforce development program to supply 100,000 workers to the submarine industrial base over the next 10 years. The program is designed to provide specialized training and education to individuals pursuing careers in the maritime industrial base. With a focus on practical skills and real-world applications, the program aims to equip students with the knowledge and experience necessary to excel in these demanding fields.

“We are incredibly proud of the progress our students have made in such a short period,” said Chris Oelschlegel, Naval Shipyard Institute Director at ORBIS. “Their dedication and enthusiasm are truly commendable. We are confident they will continue to excel and become valuable assets to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the maritime industrial base as a whole.”

The partnership between ORBIS and Maine Maritime Academy underscores both institutions’ commitment to fostering the next generation of skilled workers. By combining their expertise and resources, they aim to create a sustainable pipeline of talent that will support the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard’s long-term operational needs. This is the first of many planned programs with the Maritime Academy community, aimed at providing the Naval Shipyard with cohorts of workers who have predictable skillsets at predictable times.

Looking ahead, the program will continue to build on the momentum gained during the first half of Phase One. With continued support from both ORBIS and Maine Maritime Academy, participants will delve deeper into advanced topics and gain further practical experience, setting the stage for a successful transition into the workforce upon completion.
