Oracle Soar to the Cloud...

We all know upgrading a standard ERP implementation is hard, because of the unique integrations and customizations. Oracle has made a big claim about moving your on premise ERP system to the cloud: it's a very easy process, because it's automated. I don't buy those claims and here is why.

Larry Ellison says it's actually an easier upgrade to go from E-Business Suite to Fusion ERP in the cloud than from e-Business Suite 7 to 8. That's because Oracle has developed an automated upgrade to move you from E-Business Suite to Fusion ERP in the cloud. The following is 100% automated:

  • Evaluator
  • Configuration Analyzer
  • Auto Configurator
  • Auto Data Migration

Sure those tools inspect and analyse your installation and move your data to the cloud, but you still have unique customizations and integrations!

There are 100+ standard extensions that can potentially replace your customizations and integrations. On top of that Oracle consultancy can replace up to 30 custom integrations as part of the Oracle Consulting Package.

There is a lot to benefit by eliminating customizations, but you have to assess each and every customization. What is a standard integration by the way when you have to integrate two or more highly configurable standard products? Is a standard integration even possible?

You most likely have customized reports and workflows, what about those?

A lot of those E-Business Suite customizations can be replaced by standard Fusion functionality. Why? Fusion ERP has a lot more standard functionality compared to E-Business Suite.

At this point the easy upgrade claim falls apart. It's actually an ERP re-implementation with smart guidance rather than a fully automated and smooth upgrade. Why? The slightest difference in comparable functionality can cause a disruption in your operation.

Larry makes a couple of claims about the Oracle cloud platform and one of them is: Security patches can be rolled out to the Oracle database without disrupting the service. There is no other system in the world that can do that.

Really, no other SAAS / PAAS can do that?
