Will Oracle Screw-up NetSuite

Will Oracle Screw-up NetSuite

Oracle just bought NetSuite for $9.4 Billion.  Ironically, Larry Ellison personally made billions on the deal as an early investor in NetSuite.  (I would hate to file all that conflict of interest paperwork.)

A few weeks ago, I shared my skepticism relating to Oracle transitioning itself into a "Cloud" company, and more specifically a "SaaS" company.  The picture above is why.  NetSuite has always had the right vision: a tightly integrated, organically developed, suite of business applications, working off of one data source. Oracle, in contrast, is a patchwork of acquired applications tied together with yet other other applications and a "platform". Oracle is Frankenstein to NetSuite's David.

My hope is that Oracle will, as they have said they will in their press releases, invest heavily in NetSuite.  If they do that, and keep the products and team intact, Oracle may yet become a true SaaS business over time. Ellison was smart enough to invest in NetSuite early on, now let's hope he is smart enough to leave it alone.

We, as a NetSuite professional, look for some integrations with Oracle applications & tools. We are excited to see the innovation.

We, as a NetSuite partner, are quite excited about the acquisition. Hopefully we can work together with local Oracle partners to build a great referral engine!

Yes, Larry will get a billion or two but actually does not raise his net worth. I do not see Oracle becoming a "Cloud" company because they do not need to. Thier target customers really do not need "Cloud" for their main ERP. The beauty of this acquisition is that yes, Oracle can provide deep pockets to invest in further development of NetSuite but also controls the upgrade ladder. Meaning, when a company purchases another company it can leverage NetSuite and the two-tier system.
