Oracle Openworld 2016 Highlights
Oracle OpenWorld started last night with a number of key announcements. I thought rather than just listing them out it would help to group into three areas, cost management, accelerated innovation and lowering the bar of entry for new customers to join Oracle’s 420,000 customers globally.
Cost Management (but also innovation)
There was a lot of focus on IaaS (Infrastructure As A Service), why? For me it was very simple, customers can use our technology to deliver new levels of services at a lower cost. But we did not stop there, we explained that the No.1 focus on security still exists in the cloud and the 6 principles are still the same. I was impressed with the way we have regional facilities to provide high availability which is key for small or enterprise customers.
The new management and security cloud services provide the ability to make sure the same safe experience you have on premise exists in the cloud. The explosion on SaaS offerings allowed even more workloads to move into cloud solutions which accelerates value and drives out hidden cost.
Innovation
There was so much to discuss, but I want to highlight two areas which I feel will be key to cloud (my view) which is internet of things (IoT) and Machine Learning (AI) both can really change a business at pace. As the volume of data increases, humans will need technology to make decisions. IoT will drive data volumes up and Machine Learning will be the way business decisions can be guided via patterns that have been learned. I’m very passionate about this domain and over the next few weeks will provide examples to show the value.
I really enjoyed the ChatBox demonstration which shows how technology can allow the new culture of “my device” to interact with solutions. I could write more about this domain, but feel again I will come back in specific articles.
Lowering the Bar
Within each part of the presentations a common theme was appearing which is consuming at lower cost. Cloud@Customer, Exadata Express Cloud Service, AppDev Cloud, Cloud Native Tools, etc. all allowing people to consume faster. I stopped counting at the areas which allows new customers to use Oracle.
So Sunday is complete and now onto Monday. Really looking to the rest of the week!
