Oracle Java SE & Verified Tools

Oracle Java SE & Verified Tools

Oracle has verified a number of SAM tools to gather the data related to the installation and usage of Oracle's Java Standard Edition (Java SE) programs.

This includes - at this moment in time - the following SAM tools:

  • Lime
  • Flexera
  • Matrix 42
  • USU

A great development that more and more programs are verified by Oracle!

But... does it provide you what you are actually looking for?

What does it actually mean - verified by Oracle?

Many end-users are under the impression that since their SAM tool is verified by Oracle, they can now (finally) understand their license requirements and associated compliance position, just with one press on a button! But is that true? The answer is NO!

As Oracle explains on its website:

the verification only includes the gathering of the RAW installation and usage data. At all times additional data needs to be gathered, analysed and reconcilled with your entitlements to understand what your actual license requirements are!

But what does it then mean in practice that my tool is being verified by Oracle for Java?

The tool will classify an installation to be "commercial" in case a higher version of any of the following Java releases and updates are found to be deployed:

  • Java Release 5 Update 22 (as this is the last public version)
  • Java Release 6 Update 45 (as this is the last public version)
  • Java Release 7 Update 80 (as this is the last public version)
  • Java Release 8 Update 201 (as this is the last public version)
  • etc.

Many end-users do think because of this .... great because then my SAM tool tells me what is commercial licensable and I can determine how many subscriptions I need to purchase for my clients and (servers), right? The answer is NO!

Theclassification only tells you which Java installations are IN PRINCIPLE required to have a commercial subscription. The reason why I am saying in principle is because your development environments still do NOT require a susbcription (if you are using Oracle Java to develop your own application). And even more important:

Do you have clarity on what specific application is making use of Oracle Java? And do you know if that application provider may have already granted you the right to make use of Oracle Java through its own agreement? Or is your application provider possibly moving away from Oracle Java and making its application available on OpenJDK?

Be Aware!

Based on my experience over the last years, typically 60 or 70% of the initial installs found by your SAM tool actually do NOT require a subscription as the application provider itself has already granted the right to make use of Java SE.

Many end-users dont realise themselves that if you deploy a true commercial and seperate licensable version of Oracle Java on Vmware, then Oracle will require you to license the complete Vmware infrastructure (all cores of all ESX hosts of all vCenter Server Instances).

But keep in mind: the implementation of storage and network isolation for your Java SE deployments on Vmware can reduce your subscription requirements drastically.

Your Java account manager may state that this is not applicable for Java and is only applicable for Oracle Database?! Ask him to explain how this can be as Java SE is licensed on the exact same Processor metric as your Oracle Database and Middleware programs. True, it is maybe more difficult to control your Oracle Java deployments on Vmware then your Oracle Database deployments. But that is your responsibility to take care!

Nice summary, Richard. In general, using Oracle verified tools is normally the worst choice for all customers when it comes to an audit. And additional this verification is unfortunately no quality award concerning analysis results.
