Oracle Data Guard is a popular replication solution implemented across industries. Oracle GoldenGate is not a replacement for Oracle Data Guard and is sometimes used along with Oracle Data Guard to support specific business needs such as downstream real-time replication. There are two types of standby databases that can be created with Data Guard: physical standby and logical standby. For physical standby , Oracle Data Guard uses the Redo Apply technique. The target database is read-only. On the other hand, a logical standby database can be read-write, and changes are applied using the SQL Apply method. The following table identifies some of the key differences between Oracle GoldenGate and Oracle Data Guard.
