Oracle Basics

When Oracle started it was 1977 and it was initially called SDL (Software Development Laboratories) until 1979, then as Relational Software Inc. till 1982 and from 1982 till 1995 it was known as Oracle Systems Corporation before becoming Oracle Corporation as it is known today. It’s founders Larry Ellison, Bob Miner, and Ed Oates were all former employees at Ampex Corporation where Ellison and Miner worked as computer programmers and Oates being Ellison’s supervisor. Britannica provides us some insight into the beginning of the founder’s ideas for Oracle:

“Inspired by a research paper written by British-born computer scientist?Edgar F. Codd?that outlined a?relational database?model, Ellison and his colleagues saw commercial potential in the approach, which organized large amounts of data in a way that allowed for efficient storage and quick retrieval. The trio set to work developing and marketing a program based on Codd’s data management theory.”

What Oracle Does & How Oracle Works

Oracle is involved in many segments and has a lot to do with many areas of technology, areas very familiar to even those not heavily involved in business or enterprise applications. Oracle deals with database management systems, cloud-engineering services, it works with Hardware, Licenses, Services, and Cloud too as per Fortune. and it also owns Java, the popular programming language, with its 2010 acquisition of Sun Microsystems. It even announced the latest version of Java, known as Java 18 also known as Oracle JDK 18 just weeks ago on March 22, 2022.

The California based company was one of the earliest enterprises to use SQL (Structured Query Language). The language is the standard for relational database management systems (RDBMS). It is helpful in handling, updating and retrieval of data & metrics. Oracle’s MySQL is an open source (free to use) RDBSM, and one of the most popular programs that is used to manage databases of SQL.

Besides this there are many areas that Oracle caters to, a large part of this is its history of acquiring companies in that provide an array of solutions like NetSuite (software services industry, acquired in 2016 for $9.3 billion), PeopleSoft (provided financial applications and modules, acquired in 2005 for $10.3 billion), MICROS Systems (restaurant, casino and entertainment business focused enterprise application, acquired in 2014 for $3.3 billion), (Siebel Systems (sales automation program industry, acquired in 2005 for $5.85 billion), among others. According to Investopedia there have been 144 acquisitions made by Oracle as of March 2022. It’s most recent acquisition in the works is of Cerner which was initiated in December of 2021 and would make Oracle a part of the IT healthcare area/industry.

With its numerous products and acquisitions, you’re likely to see Oracle involved in many products and spaces across the globe and across professions.
