Opus in Artem In Itinere - I

From 29 July to 8 August 2021, the first edition of the artist residence festival "Arte Kunst Val Taro" took place in the municipalities of Bedonia, Compiano and Tornolo/Tarsogno in the Taro Valley in the province of Parma (Emilia Romagna, Italy).

The participating artists at the festival were: Carola Allemandi, Luca Gastaldo, Monika Grycko, Mirsad Herenda, Patricia Lambertus, Tancredi Mangano, Mikos Meininger, Marco Minotti, Stefanie Oberneder, Giuliano Orlandi, Francesco Orrù, Davide Ragazzi and Beatrice Roncallo.

During the festival around twenty artworks in painting, sculpture, photography and installations, were created using a wide variety of materials–from sandstone slabs to sheets, from paper to glass. Some have a direct relationship with the valley either because of the theme or the material used.

The 13 partecipating artists that came from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Germany, Italy and Poland worked in shops that had been empty for some time in the communities of Compiano, Bedonia and Tornolo/Tarsogno in Taro Valley.?

Local residents and tourists were able to engage with the artists' work in their temporary studios, ask questions about the techniques and intentions of the works, and thus establish a primary contact and experience first-hand the work of internationally recognized artists in an informal, pleasant atmosphere.

The realization of the festival was made possible, by among others, the generous support of local gastronomy and hotel operators. The invited artists enjoyed free board and lodging during the festival. In?return, the artists eagerly posted their experiences, pictures of the fantastic landscape of the Taro Valley and of course their work made on site through social media.?The response was great. Through the artists' widespread networks, comments and curious enquiries about Val Taro's location came not only from German and Italian followers but also from many other parts of the world, such as New York, Tokyo and Finland. So, the concept of using art and culture to draw attention to this wonderful place was a complete success.

The current exhibition "Opus in Artem In Itinere - Arte Kunst Val Taro" builds now a bridge between the cultural initiative of the summer festival to another cultural strategy that Opus in Artem wants to install in the Taro Valley to pursue an ambitious and long-term sustainable goal of contributing to an economic upswing of the area through cultural initiatives.

The exhibition–in a shop on the main street of Bedonia, which has also been unrented for years–shows an epilogue of the festival comprised of works by the participating artists of the festival.

But this epilogue is also the beginning of the next chapter in the story of ‘Art and Culture in the Taro Valley creating an economic recovery and advance’.?

The exhibition concept goes back to the initiative of the ‘Frei-Raum’, which was already successfully implemented in Germany in the early 1990s. During the initial period following German Reunification, vacant spaces in East German cities were used for cultural and art projects. This attracted investors and private buyers to the properties and promoted their reconstruction. The ‘Freiraum” movement has grown to embrace all regions of Europe from Dublin, to Oslo, Riga, Budapest, Nicosia, Athens, Naples, Marseille, Strasbourg, and now the Taro Valley.

The ‘Opus in Artem–In Itinere’ concept functions in a similar way. The property owner makes it available to Opus in Artem rent-free for three months. Opus in Artem restores the property at its own expense to the extent that an exhibition in the property is possible. The international art shown in the exhibition attracts people and art collectors from sometimes distant cities such as Milan, Bergamo, Verona, Parma, Piacenza, La Spezia and Genoa, who would probably never have come to the Taro Valley without this cultural offer.

These visitors in turn generate sales in the local shops and restaurants and return to their cities with positive impressions of the Taro Valley that they will spread to others through their conversations, stories of the art they have seen and their experiences. After three months, the art project ‘Opus in Artem–In Itinere’ moves to the next empty shop, renovates it and presents another art project.?The properties provided by the owners are always returned in a better and more presentable condition after an exhibition than before the event. In addition, the owner can use the pictures and promotional material from the exhibition to market the property free of charge, which significantly increases the possibility of generating interest in the property.

The local population is very grateful and open-minded towards these initiatives. The exhibition is well visited, causes smiles, happiness, moments of surprise and above all hope for better times. After problematic years with reduced possibilities, it seems that the people of the Taro Valley were just waiting for the opportunity to experience art.

The economic development of the valley will take a little more time, but a start has been made and with the principled support of the local population, future cultural initiatives will also be crowned with?success. So, confidence in our ambitious plan to support the valley with culture is absolutely appropriate.

?Le opere realizzate dagli artisti internazionali che hanno partecipato alla prima edizione del festival di residenza per artisti "Arte Kunst Val Taro" potranno essere viste in mostra a Bedonia (Parma, Italia), nello spazio allestito in via Garibaldi 20, dal 24 ottobre al 14 novembre 2021.

La mostra “Opus in Artem In Itinere - Arte Kunst Val Taro” getta un ponte tra due iniziative culturali della Val Taro che perseguono l'obbiettivo ambizioso e sostenibile a lungo termine di contribuire alla ripresa economica della zona attraverso impulsi culturali.

Una ventina di opere, tra pittura, scultura, fotografia e installazioni, sono state realizzate nei negozi riaperti nei comuni di Bedonia, Compiano e Tornolo (con Tarsogno), dove dal 29 luglio all'8 agosto 2021 si è svolto il festival “Arte Kunst Val Taro”.

Gli artisti partecipanti al festival sono stati: Carola Allemandi, Luca Gastaldo, Monika Grycko, Mirsad Herenda, Patricia Lambertus, Tancredi Mangano, Mikos Meininger, Marco Minotti, Stefanie Oberneder, Giuliano Orlandi, Francesco Orrù, Davide Ragazzi e Beatrice Roncallo.

Le opere sono state create utilizzando una grande varietà di materiali, dalle lastre di arenaria ai fogli, dalla carta al vetro. Alcune delle opere hanno un rapporto diretto con la valle o per il tema o per il materiale utilizzato.

Durante il festival questi 13 artisti -provenienti, oltre che dall’Italia, da Bosnia-Erzegovina, Germania e Polonia- hanno lavorato in negozi vuoti da tempo nelle suddette località dell’Alta Valle del Taro.

Gli abitanti locali e i turisti hanno potuto accompagnare il lavoro degli artisti nei loro studi temporanei, fare domande sulle tecniche e i significati delle opere, e quindi stabilire e sperimentare un contatto diretto con l'arte riconosciuta a livello internazionale in un'atmosfera informale e piacevole.

La realizzazione del festival è stata resa possibile, tra l'altro, dal generoso sostegno degli operatori gastronomici e alberghieri locali. Gli artisti invitati hanno infatti goduto di vitto e alloggio gratuiti durante il festival. In cambio, gli artisti hanno “postato” con entusiasmo sui social media le loro esperienze, le foto del fantastico paesaggio della Valle del Taro e, naturalmente, il loro lavoro in loco.

La risposta è stata grande. Attraverso le reti diffuse degli artisti, commenti e domande curiose sulla posizione della Val Taro sono arrivati non solo da seguaci tedeschi e italiani, ma anche da molte altre parti del mondo, come New York, Tokyo e la Finlandia. Così, l'idea di usare l'arte e la cultura per attirare l'attenzione su questo meraviglioso posto sulla terra ha avuto un reale successo.

A questo punto vorremmo ringraziare e menzionare i ristoratori e gli albergatori che hanno sostenuto con tanta generosità e fiducia la nostra visione di un futuro migliore per la Valle del Taro:

L'attuale mostra, collocata in un negozio della strada principale di Bedonia (anch’esso sfitto da alcuni anni), presenta opere degli artisti che hanno partecipato al festival, ed è quindi un epilogo del festival stesso.

Ma questa conclusione è, allo stesso tempo, anche l'inizio di un prossimo capitolo nell’impegno a portare arte e cultura in Valle del Taro creando allo stesso tempo un beneficio per l'economia.

Il concetto ispiratore della mostra risale all'iniziativa "Freiraum", già attuata con successo in Germania nei primi anni '90, nel periodo subito dopo la riunificazione tedesca. Allora, gli spazi vacanti nelle città della Germania orientale erano stati utilizzati per progetti culturali e artistici: questo aveva attirato investitori e acquirenti privati verso le varie proprietà e aveva promosso la loro ricostruzione.

"Opus in Artem - In Itinere" funziona in modo simile. Il proprietario dell'immobile lo mette a disposizione senza richiedere affitto per tre mesi; l’organizzazione, a proprie spese, mette in atto i miglioramenti per rendere possibile una mostra all’interno della proprietà stessa.

L'arte internazionale esposta nella mostra attira professionisti e collezionisti anche da città talvolta lontane, come Milano, Bergamo, Parma, Piacenza, La Spezia e Genova: persone qualificate, che probabilmente non sarebbero mai venute nella Valle del Taro senza questa offerta culturale. Questi, a loro volta, portano vendite nei negozi e ristoranti locali, e tornano nelle loro città con impressioni positive della Valle del Taro, che divulgheranno e racconteranno ad altri.

Trascorsi tre mesi, il progetto artistico “Opus in Artem - In Itinere” si sposta in un altro negozio vuoto, lo ristruttura e presenta un altro progetto artistico.

Dopo una mostra, gli immobili messi a disposizione dai proprietari sono sempre in condizioni migliori e più presentabili rispetto a prima dell'evento. Inoltre, il proprietario può utilizzare le immagini e il materiale promozionale della mostra per commercializzare la proprietà gratuitamente, il che aumenta notevolmente la possibilità di generare interesse verso la stessa.

La popolazione locale è molto grata e aperta verso queste iniziative. La mostra è ben visitata, provoca sorrisi, felicità, momenti di sorpresa e soprattutto speranza per tempi migliori. Dopo anni problematici e con ridotte possibilità, sembra che la gente della Valle del Taro stesse solo aspettando l'opportunità di vivere l'arte.

Lo sviluppo economico della valle richiederà ancora un po' di tempo, ma un inizio è stato fatto e, con il sostegno di principio della popolazione locale, anche le future iniziative culturali saranno coronate dal successo. Quindi, la nostra fiducia nell’ambizioso piano di sostenere la valle con la cultura è assolutamente appropriata.
