In recent years, the landscape of standardized testing in college admissions has undergone significant changes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many institutions adopted test-optional policies due to testing disruptions. However, as conditions have stabilized, several prominent universities have reinstated standardized test requirements. Notably, institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Dartmouth College, Brown University, and the University of Texas at Austin have returned to requiring SAT or ACT scores for applicants.
These universities cite internal research indicating that standardized test scores can reliably predict a student's academic success in college. For example, MIT's Dean of Admissions, Stu Schmill, noted that standardized tests help assess academic preparedness and identify socioeconomically disadvantaged students who may lack access to advanced coursework or enrichment opportunities.
Despite this trend among selective institutions, the majority of U.S. colleges and universities continue to maintain test-optional policies. According to FairTest, more than 80% of four-year institutions will not require SAT or ACT scores for fall 2025 admissions.
