Optimizing Electronic Connectivity in Military Applications

The maneuverability and functionality of electronic equipment is critical in military environments. In emergency situations, it can even be the difference between life and death.

As a result, it has become imperative that technology is not only designed to be reliable, but also user-centered and simple. Military equipment and its operators are often exposed to extreme stress, so the equipment needs to be as easy to operate as possible. But with RoHS directives, environmental requirements, and intended functionality all determining the shape of a device, what options do engineers have to achieve a user-friendly operating experience?

Requirements for Electronic Device Connectivity

Electronic devices require a power supply, and the integrity of data from sensors and optical systems is critical. Whether it's a device worn by a soldier or installed in a ground combat station or vehicle, wired transmission is still used in most cases because it is less likely to be subject to external interference.

For portable systems, although they can be powered by internal batteries, the external battery connection offers a number of advantages:

  • Longer service life due to increased battery capacity
  • Better ergonomics due to adjustable weight distribution
  • Easy battery replacement

In military optoelectronic systems, imaging data includes data from infrared, ultraviolet or X-ray sensors in addition to traditional video capture. As an alternative to fiber optic technology, coaxial cables ensure high bandwidth capacity while providing good resistance to electromagnetic interference. Coaxial cables are also much cheaper to maintain than fiber optic connections.

Advantages of hybrid interfaces

Transmitting both power and data in hybrid cables requires connectors and cables designed for specific needs to ensure high performance. An integrated design not only saves installation space, but also reduces overall costs. The advantages to the operator include:

  • Increased mobility and convenience, reducing the number of cables and interfaces required.
  • Enhanced reliability, reducing the risk of failure due to broken cables or damaged connections.
  • Faster operational readiness, simplifying the process of donning and doffing equipment.
  • Easier maintenance and repair, with fewer points of failure making troubleshooting and repair more efficient, reducing maintenance costs and extending equipment life.
  • Enhanced safety, with fewer cables reducing the risk of soldier injury from entanglement in equipment or surroundings.

High-end optoelectronic applications place special demands on equipment manufacturers. The problem of powering military equipment and connecting it to existing systems can be addressed with specially designed connection solutions, with different sizes and technologies for different scenarios.
