Optimizing Cloud Cost Management with FOCUS

Optimizing Cloud Cost Management with FOCUS

Welcome to a new edition of FinOps Maven! Today, we explore the latest step in cloud cost management with the FinOps Open Cost & Usage Specification (FOCUS). FOCUS is revolutionizing cloud billing by standardizing and simplifying cost management across providers. As cloud environments become more complex, managing costs and gaining financial visibility are critical. FOCUS enables businesses to break down multi-cloud billing data, providing consistent metrics that allow organizations to optimize their spending effectively.

What is FOCUS?

The FinOps Open Cost & Usage Specification (FOCUS) is a framework designed to standardize cloud billing data across providers like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. By providing a consistent format for cloud billing, FOCUS enables organizations to streamline cost management, optimize cloud spending, and make data-driven decisions. FOCUS eliminates the complexities caused by different billing formats, allowing businesses to more easily track and analyze cloud costs, leading to greater financial transparency and accountability.

FinOps Focus overview (FinOps Foundation)

How FOCUS Works

  1. Standardizing Billing Data: FOCUS creates a consistent structure for cloud billing data across different platforms. It defines standard dimensions (like region, service type) and metrics (like cost, usage) that are used to organize and analyze cloud costs.
  2. Data Conversion: Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) use the FOCUS specification to transform their unique billing formats into a standardized dataset. This ensures that organizations using multiple providers can analyze their data in a uniform format.
  3. Automating Cost Controls: Using FOCUS-compliant data, teams can automate key cost control mechanisms, such as alerts for underutilized services or cost spikes. This helps FinOps teams quickly address inefficiencies and optimize cloud usage in real-time.
  4. Integration and Validation: FOCUS includes tools like the FOCUS Validator, which ensures that billing data complies with the specification, and the FOCUS Converter, which transforms raw billing data into the FOCUS format. These tools help teams maintain consistency and ease in managing cloud costs.

Benefits of FOCUS

  • For Consumers: FOCUS provides a clear, unified view of cloud spending, improving financial transparency and cost optimization. Organizations can quickly identify unused resources and take action to reduce waste.
  • For Vendors: Vendors benefit from simplified billing integration, allowing them to provide standardized, easy-to-use data to their clients. This helps build customer trust and improve satisfaction.
  • For FinOps Teams: FOCUS empowers teams to make data-driven decisions based on consistent, reliable billing data. It fosters collaboration between finance, engineering, and operations, making it easier to align cloud spending with business goals.

What’s New in FOCUS 1.1

The latest release of the FinOps Open Cost & Usage Specification (FOCUS), Version 1.1, launched on November 13 during the FinOps X Europe event, introduces significant advancements aimed at enhancing multi-cloud cost management. These updates deepen the capabilities of the framework, enabling practitioners and vendors to unlock new insights and optimize their cloud spending even further.

  • New columns like CapacityReservationId, ServiceSubcategory, and CommitmentDiscountQuantity enable detailed tracking of capacity reservations, service subcategories, and commitment discount usage, driving better optimization
  • Improved metadata simplifies ETL workflows, enabling seamless integration and sustainable data models for billing analysis
  • Refined existing columns, such as EffectiveCost, ensure greater data accuracy for deeper financial insights
  • Enhanced multi-cloud support unifies billing data across providers, enabling cohesive analysis and cost optimization

Future Directions for FOCUS

As cloud environments evolve with the growing adoption of AI/ML workloads, data analytics, and sustainability efforts, FOCUS will continue to play a critical role in cloud financial management. Standardized billing is essential for managing the increasing complexity of cloud costs, especially in multi-cloud environments.

Looking ahead, FOCUS will help businesses automate more aspects of their cost management, improve forecasting capabilities, and drive better collaboration across teams. With its scalable and flexible framework, FOCUS is set to become the standard for managing cloud financials efficiently, ensuring businesses can optimize their cloud investments while maintaining control over their budgets.
