Optimize complex parking areas using Dynasim Parking

Optimize complex parking areas using Dynasim Parking

Written by Alberto Brignone

Have you ever wondered how many high-prestige shopping malls, stadiums, sports palaces, hospitals may have poorly designed parking areas? Where is it almost impossible to find, with ease, a parking space? Where queues spillback from the parking area and generate significant congestion to the roads?

Have you ever said: “Never again in this mall! No way I will spend again half an hour queuing to find free parking!”? Poor parking design means generating an incredibly terrible customer experience, even before entering!

As a transport engineer with over twenty years of experience in Italy and abroad, I cannot accept that a non-optimized design of a parking area generates, for investors and public bodies responsible for the accessibility of any area, problems of usability of infrastructures, and generates in the user a strong sense of discomfort.

For several years, there has been a software solution on the market that helps enormously analyze different scenarios and optimize the use of parking areas, be they small or extremely complex, as those of a stadium or an airport. This solution is Dynasim Parking.

Do you want to understand better what the software does? Watch this one-minute video!

Dynasim is a dynamic traffic micro-simulation software. Compared to other software in the industry, its Parking module is unique: you can simulate multiple alternative scenarios and evaluate ITS technologies’ impact, reducing development times dramatically.

Often, discussing Dynasim Parking with potential customers, the problem of the complexity of use and the purchase cost is mentioned. Is it “specialized software?”. Yes, it is. But with an appropriate training course and with our support, you have the opportunity to become excellent users in a short time.

Is it expensive? I turn the question back: ?how much does it cost to lose customers? How much does it cost to build a shopping mall and then realize that customers are frustrated by constant blockages? How much can it be worth having a loyal clientele, which moves smoothly through our spaces?

What is the social cost, the impact on an urban area's liveability, the overall quality of a site, when the parking of a stadium is perpetually congested, or when queues coming out of a parking lot in a private area block the streets?

Several customers have already successfully used Dynasim Parking, and I am pleased to report some testimonials:

Systematica srl: we have been using Dynasim Parking for the past ten years in both Italian and international contexts. Due to the software's flexibility, which allows implementing any type of parking, it was used both in public-open spaces projects (one above all the redevelopment of Piazzale Roma in Venice) and in supporting the layout definition of more complex parking structures. The dimensions can vary a lot, for example, a shopping center in Gela, or the underground parking system of City Life in Milan, up to the multi-story car park of the KL118 Tower in Kuala Lumpur, with more than 6000 parking spaces.

?TRM Engineering: Dynasim Parking allows to simulate any type of parking areas and multi-level parking as well, giving useful information to developers and engineers in order to find the best layout or regulations that optimize the accessibility and the circulation inside the parking. TRM Engineering has been using the Parking module of Dynasim for about 10 years, developing several simulation models related to design and verification of parking areas including multi-levels for commercial settlements with 5.000/6.000 parking spaces. Dynasim Parking has been successfully used also to define and analyse parking layout during specific phases for extension of existing buildings or development of new ones (construction site phases with modification of lanes and entry/exit gates) to optimize the parking filling and accessibility in conjunction with external road modelling. The most important projects developed by TRM Engineering have been an important shopping plot in Catania, “Cascina Merlata” Mall in Milan (Expo Area), “Fiordaliso” mall in Rozzano (Milan) and parking areas specific for shopping mall, offices and residential buildings related to the masterplan for “Aree Ex Falck e Scalo Ferroviario” in Sesto San Giovanni (Milan).
