YRH Volunteering Day.
Last month, some of our team took part in the beach clean on Hayling Island, organised by Community Matters Partnership (CMP) .
There was lots of weird and wonderful waste we found on our clean, including a sock (where did the other one go?!) , a plastic hanging basket (minus the flowers), and various bits of cutlery (wooden, plastic and metal)!
It looked like it was a pretty clean beach, but a whopping 15 huge sacks of rubbish were collected in just a few hours by the 140 volunteers! There was a particular focus on all the tiny bits of plastic, as the waste we collected was going to help towards a study by the Marine Conservation Society.
You'd think that doing a beach clean in July would involve, shorts, sandals and sun cream. But sadly, the British summer weather was against us and we were armed with raincoats, wellies and umbrellas instead! That didn't stop us (and the seagulls) enjoying fish and chips on the beach afterwards though.
