Opticians That Care

I had the pleasure of spending time with the optical team at Weiss Eye Clinic yesterday showing them the Catch London eyewear collection. In particular, with Allsion, who I quickly learned is new to the optical world. I was eager to learn why she had selected the optician profession and her thoughts so far. She was quick to let me know that she goes home tired from learning so much each day. She has gained a new appreciation from her work experiences compared to what she thought was just a salesperson position. Allsion is clearly enjoying her new career path, and this has been eye opener to her on the skills needed to be a talented optician.
Allsion resides in South Dakota which is a non-licensed state, and her past experiences were lack luster to what an optician should really offer to their clients. She had no idea that eyeglasses could be adjusted for a personal fit, and this could impact the comfort and the sight of a person. She had no idea the math skills needed to transpose a prescription correctly. She had no idea there were various lens designs, treatments or materials available to help people see comfortably and clearly. She didn't know she would need to learn how to use a lensometer to verify prescriptions before dispensing to the patients at her clinic. She didn't know what all of the numbers in a prescription meant or how they impacted the choices made for new eyeglasses. The list goes on and after I left, I thought how easy our profession could seem to others and they may not realize what we do as opticians to help people see clearly.

I have been a certified optician myself for many years in a state that doesn't require certification or a license. I have watched others deliver the bare minimum in service and care. It always bothered me since the gift of sight has such a tremendous impact on the quality of life. Fact - Not all eyeglasses are the same and if your optician doesn't give a comfortable fit and doesn't take the time to learn your unique vision needs it may be time to find someone who will. It is possible to find eyeglasses that you love and see well out of.

2 年Great article! I say this all the time that a lot of people think our job is easy but they actually don't see the full picture. This is why our local state board wants to be involved in career days so that we can impact the younger generation to be a part of this amazing industry! We have a very happy job and I wish more knew more about it! I hope this year that opticianry can make a larger effect than it ever has! I hope to be a loud voice for us. ??
