Optane is Intel's High Octane for Computers
It is probably the most frustrating part of computer use. We have all grown weary of that little blinking or spinning icon that suggests we must wait a bit longer prior to executing task x. Perhaps a new storage chip (by Intel and Micron) called "Optane" will deliver on promises to use speeds more than ten times faster than with currently available computing/storage options. PC World's, Agam Shah, discusses the possibilities of the 3D XPoint technology, specifically, in terms of performance improvements in the server community first, with PCs and other computing applications to follow.
Early Optane storage chips will be in the 16-32 GB range initially, but more substantial versions will be forthcoming once testing is complete. The chips are slated to hit the market early this year, but prices may be high until the planned mass-scale Chinese manufacturing of the chips is possible. Users of the new chips will be delighted with faster access speeds and lightning response for gaming.
Lenovo's T570 will be the first laptop scheduled to use the Optane chips. HP, Dell and possibly others will be out with their own version by June 2017. Windows 10 is considering software operating system patches to boast "Plug and Play" capabilities with Optane, however, it is likely Linux and MacOS will not be far behind.
