An opportunity to help ease uncertainty....deliver confidence and trust #auditorproud
In my 27 years as an audit professional I have never seen a level of ambiguity and uncertainty like the last 18 months. It has impacted our work, our homes, our leisure time and our relationships. There is so much that we used to think we "controlled" - and now we don't. It has been humbling and we begin to emerge from the "delta lockdown" phase of this pandemic there is much we have learned. As time passes we then turn our minds to the future, how we apply those learnings and what excites us, personally and professionally. That's opportunity.
The time for trust and confidence is now...
When reflecting on #auditorproud week this week, it's important to do so in the context of where we find ourselves. Australians are living with more uncertainty and making some really important personal decisions about their future when predicting anything with confidence is difficult. What school should I send my child to? Should I travel overseas when borders open or wait a while? Which companies and products represent safer investments for the long-term future of my family? Should I buy or sell a home in this unpredictable market? What is the appropriate aged care facility for my parents?
In the business context it's the same. Senior executives, CFOs, CEOs and Boards are making some of the biggest decisions of their careers, indeed some are actually career-defining. Keeping their teams safe, acquisitions and disposals, significant restructuring, imagining the future of their workforce, resetting their cost base and ensuring their business model is future fit.
We have all experienced making decisions, personal or professional, when they involve significant judgement. They're not binary decisions, there is nuance and ambiguity everywhere. It drives emotions that can be uncomfortable....caution, doubt, anxiety. As humans, we then search for information that may take some of that away, however this unprecedented time means we don't necessarily have a body of evidence to fall back on.
The word "assurance" means to provide confidence. To remove uncertainty and doubt. To create or increase trust. Has there ever been a time when we've needed the feeling of assurance more than we do today at work and at home?
....and at PwC we're priviliged to be able to provide it.
It is a privilege to lead the Assurance team at PwC - a team of over 2,000 people that together are responsible for a brand that stands for trust, confidence and integrity. In the past 18 months we have had only two non-negotiable priorities....the safety and wellbeing of our team and the quality of our work. While I don't have all of the answers as to how the future will play out for all of us, I do know that by prioritising these two things our team knows we have their back and that we're doing everything within our power to lead in a way that lives our values and is always "our best". This simplicity has helped us focus on the things that drive both trust and sustainability. Combined with the extraordinary talent of the PwC Assurance team and our colleagues across PwC, in the last year we have helped provide:
Aged Care, Health, Financial Services, Education, Cyber. We're in a privileged position to be providing confidence and trust on the issues that matter to Australians at a time when we need it the most.
