Opportunity: The East Africa Biodesign Fellowship Applications OPEN
The East Africa Biodesign (EAB) fellowship is a prestigious training program that seeks to equip innovators within the region with practical skills to develop contextually appropriate, accessible, and sustainable health innovations.
The program seeks to translate the incredible successes of the parent program based in 美国斯坦福大学 that has led to the founding of 56 companies which have impacted more than 13 million people.
The Stanford Biodesign fellowship housed in the Stanford Mussallem Center for Biodesign has since its founding had a hand in inspiring or advising more than 30 educational programs in 18 countries ranging from Israel and India to Singapore and Sweden. EAB is the newest of these with two centers; University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) in Kigali - Rwanda and Kenyatta University (KU) in Nairobi - Kenya.
Why East Africa?
Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) carries a major share of the global disease burden presenting a fertile ground for healthcare needs. The maternal mortality ratio is around 533 deaths per 100,000 live births and in 2020, the under-five mortality rate was about 74 deaths per 1,000 live births.
According to the World Bank, approximately 40% of the population in SSA lives on less than $1.90 a day, which is the international poverty line. This translates to roughly 413 million people living in extreme poverty unable to afford quality healthcare.
In short, there is a pull for impactful innovation in the region and thereby a need for innovators who have local expertise to help the situation.
Why join the fellowship?
The opportunity to become an impactful innovator. The key product of the program is the innovator, trained to identify needs, implement contextual solutions, and successfully launch impactful solutions to market.
Access to the global community of biodesign fellows and faculty where there are neither barriers nor boundaries. Always willing and ready to help, the community provides support, mentorship, and access to a wide range of expertise.
For 10 months, based either in Nairobi or Kigali, you will be immersed into the Biodesign program that has been tested, proved, and improved over 20 years. The process equips you with the skills to identify needs, develop solutions that matter, and deliver the solutions to the people in need of them.
