The US payments system is gnarly in many senses of that word: both attractive and challenging. I was at a FinTech event a few hours ago that showcased both aspects-- money folks looking for investment opportunities and startups trying to explain what they do. Q&A over a drink can provide some insights, but an understanding of how today's world became so gnarly provides a framework for sorting wheat from chaff in the blizzard of payments news. So I recently spent some time writing what I hope is a not-too-tedious piece on the topic; you can read it here.
