The Mayor’s Office of Climate Policy and Programs has capacity to supervise a student in need of a placement within our Environmental Justice Program. Selected fellows will be placed at the Mayor’s Office and work in collaboration with Dr. Luz Claudio from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The fellows will receive compensation either directly (approximately $6400/appointment) or via course credit. Fellows must commit to a 3-month appointment with the opportunity to reappoint for a second three months term.
Students currently in a Master’s Degree Program or Recently graduated from a Master’s Degree who are of Underrepresented Minority backgrounds (African-American, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander) qualify to be appointed for this position. Applicants must be located in New York.
A Potential Fellow for the EJ Program has:
· Demonstrated understanding of core concepts of environmental and social justice via coursework or other experience.
· Strong analytic capabilities, familiarity with research design, ability to synthesize large amounts of information, and data visualization experience are strongly preferred.
· Familiarity with various forms of public data, including health statistics and environmental indicators is preferred, but not required.
· Proficiency is Microsoft Excel, ArcGIS, SPSS, and other data analysis platform.
· Solid data management skills and attention to detail.
Description of Activities:
· Assist the Mayor’s Office of Climate Policy and Programs (CPP) with scope and initial analysis in the City’s first Environmental Justice Study.
· Help to compile and organize data from a broad range of city agencies and ensure datasets are complete and free of errors or missing information.
· Assist in appending data from various agencies to allow for multiple layers to EJ study analysis.
· Map data in GIS to provide insight to CPP and EJ Interagency Working Group on how environmental, health, and climate vulnerabilities are spread across the five boroughs.
· Work with CPP to identify key trends and statistically significant insights from the data.
· Run analyses in Excel, SPSS, and/or other data analytics software as requested by CPP and EJ IWG.
