Hitting Sotheby’s New York showrooms once again are another batch of thrilling works from the prestigious “William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation and Family Collections”, amongst this more than 50-year-old collection is a work of art from the prominent contemporary African American Color Field painter, Sam Gilliam. His artwork, composed using acrylic, oil monotype and paper collage on canvas and also remains untitled, sold for 139,700 USD on April 11th ,2023 at Sotheby’s New York auction house event “Giacometti to Oldenburg: Select Works from The William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation and Family Collections”. The painting is a beautiful example of his unique style of abstract painting, developed from color field painting, and taken from a period in his career where his works transitioned into paintings reminiscent of African patchwork quilts. This turn in art style resulted in a series of artworks that included multiple canvases carved into geometric shapes and combined into a single form.

With many various style changes, it’s safe to say that the abrupt transition in his late 80s art career was one of his most notable periods in his artistic life, and his untitled painting executed sometime in 1985 is a testament to his versatility in the face of a modern and constantly changing era. His traditional approach of staining and soaking wet canvases has been substituted with one in which multiple coats of thick acrylic colors and gels are scrabbled, spread, and layered up on the canvas's surface in a rich impasto technique.

One of the most notable changes in Gilliam's untitled artwork was his use of geometric shapes and forms. Along with several accolades and medals during his career, he also won the MacArthur Fellowship in 1975 and the National Museum of American Art's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1992.

In spite of his achievements, Gilliam never sought celebrity or attention and remained modest and grounded throughout his life.
