Let's talk epidemics...
What we are doing in cannabis is much more than investing in a new, hyper growth stage industry, with incredible upside potential, and latent demand.
While we are making money, we are also redefining an epidemic here in the US.
The epidemic of drug addiction, the epidemic of drug violence, and the millions of lives we have lost to both of them. I have had three very close friends and family battle with opioid addiction. The havoc that drug has caused upon my family and the families of these individuals is hard to speak about.
AND I am far from alone. Many of you have shared your stories with me.
It should be no surprise, while the prescribing rate of opioids declined since 2012, nation-wide opioid overdose deaths have grown at a DD pace over the last five years (now at 23 deaths per 100,000 Americans in 2017 according to the FDA). Not to mention the disproportionate impact to our veterans and the estimated cost of ~$500 bn per year to our government.
Where am I going with this rosy outlook?
There is mounting evidence that cannabis can be used as an effective substitute for opioid use.
In fact, opioid mortality 5-year growth for CO, CA, WA, and OR (all legal medical/adult-use states), are notably below the national average, further supporting a suspicion that cannabis can have a material impact on the opioid crisis.
While national rates of opioid morbidity continue to climb, the divergence in trends by state has become increasingly amplified, as legal cannabis states are consistently reporting lower levels of growth in opioid mortality relative to non-legal states.
Opioid Deaths After Legalization of Cannabis
Now, can we be sure correlation is causation? Of course not. But let the math lead the way. So far it is looking pretty promising to at least continue research on.
Especially when you view the correlation between opioid use declining as cannabis becomes an alternative for those previously misusing opioids and still needing symptom relief.
The moral of the story is, as this industry becomes normalized, so too will the research become more expansive.
The fastest way to cure stigma and find the truth is with the light of day.

5 年Of course one of the things that heavily skews these numbers is that the fda considers opioids like heroin and meth in the statistics as well. These have very high death rates and skew the overarching opioid death toll way beyond the real numbers.
