Ophthalmology Advisor Stepped Up Its AAO Coverage…literally!

The American Academy of Ophthalmology ’s annual meeting was back at Chicago this year and, if you attended, you may have seen me trying to catch my breath as I scampered up four flights of steps and then back down two flights and then, realizing I was on the wrong floor, across a sky bridge and up a different four flights to get to the session I was looking for. And then back. Honestly, Chicago is a top 5 conference city for me, but you definitely need to stretch before entering McCormick Place for the day. Protip: Jam some of those insoles runners use into your dress shoes.?

I like to spend the majority of my AAO time observing the latest research in retina (I suppose because I’m contractually obligated to do so and write about it — but I also find it fascinating). This year, the trend appeared to be in reducing the burden of treatment for patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration, as well as diabetic macular edema and other conditions that may be treated with regular intravitreal injections. The growth in this area of research over the last year has been tremendous, with options such as high-dose aflibercept, faricimab, as well as tyrosine kinase inhibitors and related devices, including a vorolanib delivery insert with recently-reported phase 2 clinical trial findings.

In truth, I wanted the article to cover even more ground, including the gene therapy options under review and a host of new geographic atrophy treatments. It’s not as if I didn’t gather enough notes about those aspects of retinal care (Lordy, there are notes). But let’s revisit those in their own articles. No one needs one 6,000 word article when you can have three 2,000 word articles. If that is what you want, you can always just read all three simultaneously. I’ll alert you when the trilogy is complete.?

While I put the next installments together, you can always check in on what else our team is working on. For instance, this month we’re detailing the many associations between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and various ocular and visual conditions, including glaucoma, dry eye, and keratoconus.

Prostaglandin Analogues Have a Lower Uveitis Risk Than Other Glaucoma Drops
Disease-Modifying Effects of VRDN-001 Improve Parameters Associated With TED

And circle back to check in on what else you missed from the conference. We didn’t stick solely to retinal care there. We looked into the presentations on glaucoma medications, treatments for thyroid eye disease, long-term intraocular lens complications, new therapies for patients with presbyopia, the associations between autoimmune disease and dry eye and more.

Intraocular Lens Dislocation Risks Include Combined Surgeries, Complications
CSF-1 Low-Dose Pilocarpine Improves Vision Outcomes in Presbyopia?
Corneal Epithelial Thickness May Be A Marker for Autoimmune Associated Dry Eye

Did you see any new research at the conference that we didn’t highlight? If you think we missed something, please reach out. Just…don’t make me run to meet you in person, my feet are killing me.
