Operations in Rafah

Palestine

Rafah has been serving as the primary hub for humanitarian assistance in Gaza. Key needs identified include shelter, WASH, health, and food assistance for the 1.1 million Gazans facing famine-like conditions. Without fuel, 10?hospitals, 17 primary healthcare centres, 28 ambulances, and 23 medical points across Gaza will soon cease functioning.?We analyse the multisectoral impact of Israel’s operations in and forced evacuation of Rafah since 7 May 2024.

Brazil: floods in Rio Grande do Sul

Since 27 April, the floods have affected over 2.1 million people across the state of Rio Grande do Sul. At least 155,000 people have become homeless as a result of flooding. Porto Alegre city, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, received 258.6mm of rainfall in just three days, equivalent to more than two months of the rain expected for April and May.?Water levels remain critically high and authorities warn?that further flooding and electricity outages are likely.?

Colombia: climate hazards in San Andrés

San Andrés is the Colombian department at highest risk of climate change. San Andrés?has been experiencing a significant economic decline in tourism – its main industry – in recent years. This, coupled with its geographic exposure to climate hazards and?limited interventions by the humanitarian sector, creates important risks associated with the upcoming 2024 hurricane season. We?highlight the?potential risks through this anticipatory note.?

Timor-Leste: El Ni?o-related drought

Drought and heat since mid-2023 have delayed, decreased, and destroyed rice, maize, and other staple food crops. This affects livelihoods and food security for over 900,000 people (70% of the population), whose primary income source is agriculture. Worsening food insecurity will increase malnutrition levels, which are already high among children. Needs are particularly high among women in Timor-Leste.

Kenya: heavy rainfall and floods

Since the start of the March-April-May (MAM) rainy season, the floods have affected more than 380,00 people and displaced over 280,000 people, and resulted in the loss of more than 260 lives. Additionally, over 9,000 livestock have been lost and at least 41,000 acres of farmland submerged.?Rainfall is expected to persist throughout mid-May in all 47 counties, with heavy rains likely in various regions.
