Operations of gate valves

The operation of gate valves involves the movement of a gate (a flat or wedge-shaped obstruction) to control the flow of fluid within a pipeline. Here's a detailed explanation of how gate valves operate:

1. Closed Position: In the closed position, the gate is positioned perpendicular to the flow of fluid, effectively blocking it. This prevents the fluid from passing through the valve.

2. Opening the Valve: To open the valve, the operating mechanism (such as a hand wheel, gearbox, or actuator) is manipulated. When the mechanism is turned or activated, it initiates the movement of the gate.

3. Rising Stem Valves: In rising stem gate valves, as the valve is opened, the stem (to which the gate is attached) rises vertically. This movement lifts the gate out of the path of the fluid flow. This rising action is often visible, providing a visual indication of the valve's position.

- Non-Rising Stem Valves: In non-rising stem gate valves, the stem remains stationary, while the gate moves up or down along the threads of the stem. This design is often used in applications with limited vertical space.

4. Flow Control: As the gate moves upward, it gradually clears the passage for fluid flow. The amount of flow is controlled by the position of the gate. Gate valves offer a linear flow characteristic, meaning the flow rate increases steadily as the valve opens.

5. Fully Open Position: When the valve is fully open, the gate is completely out of the fluid path, allowing unrestricted flow through the valve.

6. Closing the Valve: To close the valve, the operating mechanism is manipulated in the opposite direction. This causes the gate to move downward, blocking the flow of fluid once again.

7. Sealing: Gate valves typically rely on a metal-to-metal seal between the gate and the valve body to achieve tight shut-off. The gate is pressed against the valve seats by the force of the fluid pressure when the valve is in the closed position, ensuring a secure seal.

There are Mainly 4 types of Gates as Sluice Gates, Vertical Gates, Radial Gates and Automatic Tilting Gates (Godbole Types) in Sluice Gates operations system is Dependent on Size of Clear Opening Sizes, rest Rising Spindle, Hoisting system Design as per opening Sizes, Rest same in Vertical Gates, Radial Gates of May Having To be operated through heavy duty Gear box System's, and Automatic Tilting Gates not required any types of Hoisting System Due to As Water Level Goes Upsides till top is Automatically tilting due to Pressure of Water at the Flood Times Electricity Power shut down and no Person allowed to operation Manually, in this time Automatic Tilting Gates may tilted open Depends on Pressure of Water or in flood if open Fully that's why No Hoisting System Required and as Water Level Goes Dound Side's it's Automatically Closed, in this Case if Water Level is 50% of Gates Sides is not open till top level Water rise in such Case Water is required in flow there is Provision of Emergency Hoist as Water required may be operation done by Emergency Hoist..in Sluice Gates we require Brass Seat for Provide Sealing and in Vertical Gates it's Rubber Sealing is Provided same in Radial Gates and Automatic Gates Depending on Sizes
