Operational Research Analyst - Anand's story

Operational Research Analyst - Anand's story

Hi, my name’s Anand and I work as a Scientific Officer within Port Modelling (Maritime/Goods) for the Home Office. I have worked here for almost 5 years.??

I chose to work for the Home Office because I have the opportunity to answer important but tricky questions. Being responsible for immigration, security and law and order, the Home Office plays a fundamental role in keeping citizens safe and the country secure and I get a lot of satisfaction knowing I am playing a part in that. ?

As I progressed through secondary school and A-levels, it became clear to me that my future lay within STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Upon completing my A-levels, I joined the University of Surrey to study a Masters in Chemical Engineering. I also worked in retail at that time, which gave me the first real taste of dealing with people in a professional environment. The challenges that came with studies and work definitely helped me while career paths became clearer. Eventually, I landed a job within Borders Analysis as an operational researcher.

Having completed an engineering degree, I use my skills as a problem solver to help ensure that the border is kept safe, while ensuring that ports are able to smoothly undertake various duties relating to tourist and freight traffic.?

My day-to-day work involves using various operational research techniques to deliver analytical products. A large portion of my time is spent on developing models using software such as R, Excel and Simul8 - this is done either alone or collaboratively through working level meetings. I also spend a significant amount of time engaging with stakeholders and subject matter experts in order to develop project plans and ensure that they are adhered to.?

Each day is different and can vary based on where I am in relation to project delivery. For me, a typical day can be split such that roughly 30% of my time is spent in meetings and 70% of my time is spent on producing analytical products. Some days can be more meeting-heavy, particularly when close to delivering a project. On other days, I might explore new Operational Research techniques and innovate so that I can share knowledge with the team.?

I thoroughly enjoy working with a very supportive team. This is particularly important when the pace of the work becomes challenging as everyone pulls together and supports each other. My projects focus on both freight and passengers being processed at maritime ports. ?I know with a level of certainty that my contribution will have an impact on UK citizens, and this is one of the main things that keeps me motivated.?

As well as getting a great deal of satisfaction from my role, I feel as though I am encouraged to undertake more challenging tasks and develop my career through the Home Office and Border Force at a pace that works for me.?
