An operational data store (ODS) serves as a key component for operational reporting and provides data to the enterprise data warehouse (EDW). While the EDW supports tactical and strategic decision-making, the ODS focuses on operational reporting, controls, and immediate decision-making. It complements the EDW in a decision support environment by integrating data from various sources for real-time or near real-time operations.
?
An Operational Data Store (ODS) is a database that consolidates data from various sources to facilitate additional operations, such as reporting, controls, and operational decision support. Unlike a production master data store, the data in an ODS is not fed back into operational systems. Instead, it may be used for further processing and transferred to the data warehouse for reporting purposes.
The key goals of an Operational Data Store (ODS) include:
1.???? Data Integration: Consolidating data from multiple sources to provide a unified view.
2.???? Operational Reporting: Supporting real-time or near real-time reporting for day-to-day operations.
3.???? Decision Support: Assisting in immediate decision-making processes by providing up-to-date information.
4.???? Data Quality: Ensuring the accuracy and consistency of data before it is used for reporting or further processing.
5.???? Data Accessibility: Making data readily available for operational users and systems.
6. Data Transformation: Performing necessary transformations and cleansing to prepare data for further use in the data warehouse.
